  • George Monck dit Monk, 1 duc d'Albemarle (Aumale), Général de la mer (amiral), est considéré comme l'homme fort sous Oliver Cromwell, pour qui il mène la répression en Écosse, avant de changer de camp et de contribuer à la restauration du roi catholique Charles II, non sans avoir entre temps purgé l'armée d'une partie des protestants. Deuxième fils de Sir Thomas Monck, un homme de bonne famille, il est né à Potheridge, près de Torrington, dans le Devonshire.
