Peintre, graveur, imprimeur et imprimeur en taille-douce. - Natif de Reading. Fils de l'imprimeur et graveur londonien Daniel Havell. Travaille en collaboration avec son père de 1809 à 1816. En 1823, il s'établit à son compte au 79, Newman street à Londres où il restera jusqu'en 1829 et travaille en association avec son fils Robert II Havell, dit Havell junior, jusqu'à leur séparation en 1828. En 1827 il commence la publication d'un recueil de planches d'après l'ouvrage de John James Audubon "The Birds of America". En 1830, il s'installe 77, Oxford street et se spécialise dans les ouvrages de zoologie. Après sa mort en 1832 son fils continue la publication des planches d'Audubon (1838) jusqu'à son départ pour les États-Unis où il s'établit en 1839
