Compagnie de commerce fondée en 1599, pourvue le 31 décembre 1600, par la reine Élisabeth Ière, d'une charte lui conférant le monopole du commerce avec les Indes orientales et qui allait devenir l'instrument principal de la conquête de l'Inde par les Anglais. - Le monopole commercial de la Compagnie est aboli en 1813 par lord Liverpool. - Le "Government of India Act" du 2 août 1858 consacre la passation des pouvoirs de la Compagnie à la Couronne
